The author reviews, discusses, and contrasts different scientific attitudes on the nature of cooperative interaction between man and computer, with particular reference to the use of metaphors for enhancing and improving such interaction. Critical issues in cognitive engineering are discussed. Model formation is discussed. The use of iconic metaphors in programming is discussed
