Abstract :
The construction and properties of semiconductor ring lasers operating in a single direction with either free space or optical fibre external cavities is described. Low loss components and efficient coupling to the optical fibre enables laser operation at low thresholds to be achieved. A 22 cm free space ring laser which exhibits low noise output is demonstrated
