Abstract :
Outlines a proposal for general purpose enhanced multi-point data services for GSM. Two services are proposed which are being discussed currently with the GSM. Firstly, a downlink to distribute information to mobile stations (MSs) at a data rate of up to 9.6 kbit/s and secondly, an uplink to collect, efficiently, short status messages from vehicles. All the multi-point services terminate at a service centre and are connected to the terrestrial end of a public land mobile network (PLMN). Although of a general nature, the new services would fulfil the requirements of a comprehensive road traffic informatics (RTI) system based on GSM mobile communications
