  • Abstract
The imput impedance of a symmetrical insulated buried horizontal dipole (61.5 feet of type RG59B cable) has been measured over the frequency range of 0.5 to 20 MHz. Five zero reactance points (resonances) were observed in this range. A transmission line description of this configuration will be presented which accounts for the effect of finite burial depth on the complex propagation constant and characteristic impedance of the wire without restrictions on the size of the loss tangent of the (assumed) uniform electrical properties of the half space. It is shown that a particular frequency variation of the dielectric permitivity and conductivity produce a good fit between the theoretically predicted and measured impedance data. The earth parameters thus derived are compared with a model proposed by C. Longmire and K. Smith.
