Abstract
The adoption of knowledge-based systems (KBS) involves a complete re-appraisal of the way in which a system is modelled and hence in which a control strategy is developed for it. The introduction of KBS concepts substantially increases the tools and methods that may be employed for problem-solving. The important task is to determine which approach is most suitable for the characteristics of the problem. Such a methodological approach is only just beginning. Control engineers/researchers do not yet appear to be significantly involved in this process; the vacuum is, however, being filled by computer scientists and AI practitioners. Consequently, many simple misapplications are being made, but solid results are beginning to appear. This discusses some of these methodological issues and to assesses their impact on control engineering practices
