  • Abstract
In the domain of mobile radio, a sector has yet to take off: wide area data communications. Already there are many converging major components such as low cost radio terminals, generalization of computer in professional life including laptops and an increasing demand for mobility. In Europe, several operators are going to open Dedicated Data Networks. Data transmissions cover growing needs of professional users. The authors stress that there are basically two needs for radio data transmission: two-way paging and remote data base access. It is difficult to simultaneously optimize a system for both needs, but in both cases the satellite link is seen as the only economical way to offer a global coverage. The authors introduce the global data network concept. Based on the packet specificity, and using existing satellites, it combines the traffic capacity and the indoor penetration of land networks with the global coverage of satellites
