Abstract
An ICAI system which uses a distributed rule base is described. The rational of the system is described and an extract from a model course is shown. The rule base operates by placing production rules at any point in the hierarchy of the course. The courseware is structured in a hierarchical manner and the course is divided into a number of lessons. The lessons are subdivided into sections and each section may have further subsections. The penultimate level is the page, which is made up of a number of overlays called steps. Rules may be placed on a page, subsection, section or course
