Abstract :
This paper considers the use of in-building electrical wiring in as the communication channel for the deployment of telephony system for homes and small businesses in Jamaica. The paper presents the design considerations and implementation of the analog electronic interface to the power line infrastructure and presents results from actual powerline channel measurements in a laboratory setting as well as in an existing in-building electrical wiring application. The paper also presents some considerations for the integration of the powerline communication system with existing telephony standards, ranging for standard analog phone sets to the emerging voice over IP (VOIP) standards such as the session initiation protocol (SIP)
