Abstract :
For the able-bodied, communication by direct conversation (face-to-face or using the telephone) or by the exchange of text (on paper or electronically) is familiar and simple. Developments in international telecommunications and CSCW offer great potential in enhancing these means of communication. In particular, the integration of computer and telecommunications technologies can provide a powerful platform for the flow of information between nations. For many disabled people, these developments could be very liberating. People with impaired mobility, who have speech difficulties, or who find difficulty in hearing, can become isolated. Increased possibilities for interpersonal communications could provide many benefits, and allow disabled people the chance to participate in the world on more equal terms. The authors discuss the need for computer-mediated solutions to the problems of interpersonal communications for disabled people and look at representative systems
