Abstract
Computer supported cooperative work (CSCW) has rapidly developed as a distinct research area with the emergence of a wide variety of systems for supporting various forms of cooperation and group working. This development of CSCW systems has not only increased the range and power of computer technologies aimed at supporting group working, it has also started to bring into question some of the mechanisms and techniques of existing computer technologies. The author examines the nature of CSCW and the range of disciplines involved, highlighting the interaction needed for successful research. The range of supporting technologies is highlighted. This impact of CSCW upon technology is briefly examined for databases, one of the computer mechanisms effected by CSCW
