Abstract :
However well-designed the grounding, screening and filtering of a digital system, there will always be a transient that will defeat it. The author explains how a cost-effective approach to EMC for high integrity microprocessor systems recognizes this and allows for a method of restarting the processor automatically when it crashes. The watchdog circuit is a near-universal means of performing this function, but it needs careful design to ensure adequate integrity in operation
