Abstract
By implementing heterodyne detection, we perform the first extensive study of a tunnelling- ionization-induced 3rd harmonic, showing a high sensitivity of its spectral amplitude and shape to quasi-periodic peaks of tunnelling ionization and target pre-ionization in the multi-photon regime. Following these initial gas- phase experiments, detailed background-free all-optical studies of tunnelling ionization in bulk crystals and glasses that are transparent to the 3r harmonic of the few-cycle 750 nm pulses should also become feasible.
