  • Abstract
Computation is, of course, a fundamental part of the design and implementation of control systems. It is used both off-line for functions such as simulation, analysis and synthesis of schemes and on-line for functions associated with implementations which use embedded processors. In the case of off-line functions, intensive research effort over the past two decades has provided efficient, reliable and portable tools for many of the common control systems design procedures. The success and maturity of this work has naturally led to a re-consideration of problems previously considered intractable from a computational standpoint. Such problems typically have models with state dimensions in the thousands and, for example, arise in complex distributed systems whose dynamics extend over wide frequency ranges or spatial domains. Further, considerable work has also been undertaken on extending the available techniques to other classes of systems. One such area is 2D linear systems which are the subject of this paper.
