Abstract
A pyramidal video compression technique has been developed with a VLSI implementation in mind. This technique is computationally simple and makes use of the multi-resolution properties of pyramids to adaptively interpolate received images. The interpolation is adaptive in two ways, only moving parts of the image are interpolated and the depth of interpolation is dependant on the amount of motion between two frames. This technique has been used to implement a video codec using Actel gate array devices. The complete codec system fits onto a single 3U size Eurocard
