Abstract :
As part of the SPECTRE research programme, National Transcommunications is studying the digital coding of broadcast resolution television. Much activity is focusing on target bit rates around 12 Mbits/sec for conventional resolution, and 20-30 Mbits/sec for HDTV. To achieve these levels of data compression, very sophisticated techniques need to be used to exploit temporal and spatial redundancy in the source image. The authors describe a two stage coding techniques
