Abstract
Nearly all real (engineering) control problems originate for economic, safety or military purposes. Such control problems are not an end in themselves but rather, a means to an end. The key issues for higher education in such application driven work are those of funding, problem identification and collaboration. The paper is intended to create an awareness of the need for enhanced collaboration between control theorist and practitioners, between industrialist and academics, or even between academics from different engineering disciplines
