  • Abstract
It is in considering future distribution requirements that the universal standard of film master material has a high value today. HDTV systems rivalling 35 mm film are being developed, primarily for electronic post production and special effects at the present time. However, 35 mm film remains the highest quality universal medium for both television and the cinema. The purpose of this paper is to highlight and discuss those factors which make film such a flexible medium for meeting the present and future needs of TV and the cinema. Image quality, aspect ratio, telecine transfer, post production, and the existing film libraries are examined
