Abstract :
This paper presents the results of an investigation into surface charging and charge decay in solid dielectrics such as Teflon (PTFE), epoxy (filled with alumina) and polyethylene. The experiments were carried out in atmospheric air and SF6 environment. Impulse and AC voltage were used to generate charges, by partial discharges, in a point/insulation sample/plane electrode arrangement. The results showed that surface charging and charge decay are influenced by several parameters such as ambient gas, surface resistivity, voltage level and polarity and subsequent voltage application
