Abstract :
Possibility of long distance sound communication in various species of baleen whales is investigated by simulating the long range propagation of their sound transmission between the coast of Alaska and the Island of Hawaii. In the simulation, the parabolic equation (PE) method is applied to the actual sound speed profiles and underwater topography along the propagation path over typical transmission frequency bands of baleen whales. The simulation demonstrates that the higher possibilities of long distance sound communication of both fin whales and blue whales when using the deep sound channel. It is also indicated that among fin whales and among blue whales the communication across the North Pacific can be made by their coming close to shore slopes of the Island of Hawaii
