Abstract :
The Power Electronics option in the final year of the BEng degree at Manchester Polytechnic is concerned with the terminal characteristics of switching devices and the circuits in which these devices operate to transform power from one sort to another. Several CAD packages are used (both industry standard and custom designed) but the paper concentrates on the use of PSPICE as a means of enhancing the teaching/learning process and as a tool in the design of power switching circuits. Students use PSPICE UC as an aid to understanding the operation of thyristor converter circuits and to determine the transient performance of dc machines (including mechanical effects)
