Whither (wither?) network management

The network, be it voice, data or both, is a critical part of the business for most organisations. Network management is equally critical in maintaining the availability of the network. It is, therefore, a little surprising to find some leading authorities predicting the end of network management. Are they right? And what are the key factors which affect the quality of network service?
