  • Abstract
The British Standard B56651: 1990 is a code of practice which covers the aspects involved in protecting a building from lightning strikes and the possibility of injury within a structure. Lightning transients can be induced onto telecommunications, data and mains lines by three different mechanisms: resistive coupling, inductive coupling, and capacitive coupling. A plethora of discrete components exist to provide protection against transients. These include gas discharge tubes, transient suppression diodes (transzorbs), varistors, transformers, inductors and resistors
