Abstract :
Solid materials (copper and Teflon) used in HV circuit breakers were exposed to a closely spark discharge in SF6 and SF6 /CF4 mixtures. The surface of the different samples was studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to reveal possible interactions with the by-products. Results show that discharging in SF 6 and SF6/CF4 mixtures produces active species, mainly F-groups, which exhibit strong interactions with metallic surfaces. The surface modification due to the discharge processes was found to be less apparent in the case of insulating materials
