    The author gives a general introduction to the variety of detectors available which respond to optical radiation at wavelengths ranging from 200 nm to 2.5 μm. There are two main types of detector, thermal detectors and photon detectors. Thermal detectors convert optical power into heat and incorporate a means of sensing the resulting heat flow. Photon detectors respond to individual photons independent of their energy
