Abstract :
Nowadays, the streaming of high-quality video content for Internet TV or IPTV is one of the most demanding applications for the networks. This study focuses on the provision of multicast video service by means of a point-to-multipoint transport network as an alternative to delivery over a set of point-to-point connections. By a network design tool applied to study cases, we will evaluate how the multicast transport solutions can achieve lower capital expenditure taking advantage of the synergy of packet switching, packet replication and optical infrastructure. We will compare the different scenarios of legacy unicast circuit-switched transport (e.g. SDH), Carrier-Ethernet multicast and optical multicast transport in terms of network cost.
