Abstract
The authors describe BT´s data narrowcasting experiment conducted via the ESA OLYMPUS satellite from October, 1989 to March 1991. The purpose of the experiment was to assess the feasibility of using the spare capacity of a satellite TV signal for delivery of data and to demonstrate the suitability of MAC/packet for this kind of application. Brief results of transmission tests using existing PAL/VBI teletext equipment and low-cost receive equipment specially developed for MAC/packet operation are presented for comparison. A number of applications are suggested in order to illustrate the potential of one-way data delivery systems
