Abstract :
In this paper, we consider global approaches to scheduling flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) of the type considered by Perkins and Kumar (1989). We call the class of global scheduling policies that we consider global synchronous clearing (GSC) policies because they operate by synchronizing the flow of parts through sections (which we call paths) of the FMS. We provide sufficient conditions for the stability of two GSC policies, and we provide some guidelines for the choice of GSC policies vs. distributed policies
