Abstract :
Historically, a significant number of accidents in complex systems have been attributed to a lack of situation awareness (SA). Despite increased use of automation and improvements in display design to improve SA, re-design is unable to completely eliminate accidents of these types. One viable option is to train operators to acquire and to maintain situation awareness. We propose employing expert knowledge in a context-based approach to train SA. We describe an initial computational architecture for implementing an intelligent coach for training SA. This description includes how this computational architecture can be integrated with an existing intelligent aid to become a tutor-aid for situation awareness
