Abstract :
An analysis is made of thermally stimulated depolarization (TSD) currents in aromatic polyamide (NOMEX), which is a high temperature material. Studies were carried out with films of 75 μm and 127 μm thickness, charged using a corona discharge in a point-plane gap in air at atmospheric pressure. TSD currents were measured over a temperature range of 0-200°C, and the influence of various poling conditions on the TSD currents has been investigated. The effect of vacuum deposited aluminum as electrode material has been investigated. Corona charged aromatic polyamides with positive polarity voltages show TSD current of either polarity depending upon the temperature range. The activation energy for aluminum electrodes was observed to be 0.5 eV. The TSD currents for the low temperature peak are considered to be electronic. The abnormal TSD currents observed at lower temperatures are also considered to be due to negative charge carriers
