Abstract
Environmental scanning and interpretation (ES&I) provides crucial information on which strategic decision making is based. The paper introduces a model that discusses five information filters observable in the ES&I activities. These are: the perceptual filter; power filter; the organized scanning filter; the interpretation filter; and the communication filter. It also examines attributes that may influence the performance of each filter and thus the quality of output, strategic information, of ES&I. Finally, the paper shows how an executive information system can be used to lessen the potential negative effects that may be created by the filters
