Abstract :
Mie scattering theory and assumptions about drop size distributions are applied to study the extinction coefficient of electromagnetic waves in fog and rain. The dependence of extinction on liquid water content, on the effective drop radius of fog and on rain intensity is analysed. Simple relations are given for optical extinction in fog and rain.
