Abstract
Observations of water trees in molded XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) grown by the needle method have shown that they consist of a network of microchannels wandering through the polyethylene. This structure was evidenced even at the early stages of the growth. Their diameters vary from 0.1 μm to 1 μm. The same morphology was observed in a cable insulator aged in situ, at least for well-developed water trees. It is thus concluded that the artificially grown water trees could represent a good simulation for studying their development
