Abstract
New means of characterizing and monitoring digital radiolinks are presented. It is shown how the possibilities of current monitoring tools can be extended to most of the important parameter measurements. The measurement principle is to capture a receiver baseband signal sequence (with digital process) on one channel and then to analyze this sample in order to obtain information about the channel. This measurement is performed without any interruption of the transmitted traffic. It is shown how various measurements on linear and nonlinear distortions, propagation events, and thermal noise are possible. These measurements, which are extracted from a 140-Mb 64 QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) modem, are presented and discussed
