Abstract
The authors investigated a means of possibly increasing the resistance to wet tracking. It is based on the supposition that dry band formation can be likened to the abrupt interruption of an electrical circuit by a switch. An arc is formed in this instance as in the breakdown of a dry band. It is proposed that methods used to suppress contact arcing and damage in a switch can be applied with equal validity to the suppression of dry band arcing and its damaging effect on surfaces. The energy in a switching transient can be removed from the sensitive contact breaker region by inclusion of capacitance. The influence of capacitance on wet tracking is investigated in the light of this equivalence
