Abstract
The reliability of analog ocean cable systems requires an understanding of both the frequency-dependent characteristics of the insulation as the signal transmission medium and the electrical strength of that same insulation which also carries the power to periodically amplify the signal. Precise dielectric techniques were developed to control the polyethylene insulation to meet system requirements. DC breakdown became a significant reliability consideration with the change to an undersea lightguide system where sea water replaces copper as the DC current return. Studies on defect model systems were performed to establish guidelines for acceptable stress concentrations
