Because of the varied requirements placed on the definition of the ISDN PCI it has emerged as a compromise that provides a powerful solution to application access to ISDN across many operating systems. The extendibility that has been factored into the design means that it provides a solution for the protocols required by applications today yet will allow access to other protocols to be added easily in the future
