Abstract
Using a generalized model of a beamforming source, a simple analytical expression is developed between the echo amplitude variance (measured across the array at a reference range bin) and the integrated sidelobe ratio of the adaptive pattern (approximated by the normalized echo amplitude variance). This new insight enables one to set an amplitude variance threshold test for proper phase synchronizing sources. A normalized echo amplitude variance of 0.1 at a reference range bin predicts an ISLR of -10 dB
