Abstract :
One of the difficulties confronting translation from one language to another is a one-to-many problem. Expressions in one form in a source language take several forms in the target language. A problem of this kind demands probing for factors triggering differences in treatment. As an example, the author presents a study of apposition or quasi-apposition constructions in English, for one construction in Japanese corresponds to several in English. Although the factors causing differences in treatment in English are not of one type, the semantic feature self control or volition seems to operate
