Abstract
The authors describe the design and construction of a conductor-plane transmission line measurement probing system. The probe or loop, is calibrated by using a fast rise time mercury pulser in a 50 ohm coaxial configuration. The same equipment is used to transmit the pulses into the test line. Amongst other significant applications, the loop can distinguish between the electric and magnetic field components of a travelling pulse and by adjustment of its angle, can indicate the direction of travel. The induced loop voltage is a sensitive measure of the characteristics of the pulse as it travels along the line. The measurements are done with a high speed digital sampling oscilloscope
