Abstract :
Eskom introduced two new tariffs in April 1991, the T1 and the T2. The T1 tariff is designed for large users with demands in excess of 1 MW; it charges the customers for both the demand in each half hour period and also for energy used in restricted periods of time. The T2 tariff charges the customers on energy used in restricted time periods. Both tariffs are seasonal, both use exclusion dates and both treat Saturday and Sunday as separate tariff structures. The authors discuss why Eskom and other electric utilities are introducing complex tariff structures and the metering technology that is already available to meet these requirements. The authors also discuss the success and problems Eskom has experienced in the introduction of these tariffs
