Abstract
Tree initiation mechanisms are described mainly for polyethylene. The importance of V-t characteristics is emphasized for tree initiation studies, since processes may be different for different voltages and times. Not only morphological aspects, but also space-charge effects are accentuated. The V-t characteristics for tree initiation are explained in terms of electric-field-induced degradation of polymers and space-charge accumulation. A space-charge-oriented model is demonstrated for tree initiation, which includes submodels to explain many associated phenomena
