Abstract :
The system described is well advanced in its implementation and together with the new generation of digital PCM VTRs will provide a state of the art programme and commercial transmission system. With the modular elements outlined, a phased integration has been possible. An all digital distribution system offers improved operational simplicity without any of the day to day adjustments that are necessary with its analogue counterpart. In addition, the ability to distribute and record and large numbers of stereo sources each with its own source identification and integral time code, together with other user information offer considerable system benefits. It is believed that in spite of the technical difficulties that are still to be resolved, the move towards a totally digital distribution system is the way forward. Both the NICAM 728 and AES formats have been proved to be rugged and offer a high level of signal integrity. The adoption of these formats ensures total compatibility with the next generation of transmission standards that will find their way into terrestrial and satellite broadcast centres
