Abstract
Nonlinear optical effects can be divided conveniently into two categories; electro-optic effects in which an applied electric field interacts with the optical fields, and nonlinear (or all-optical) effects in which two or more optical fields interact directly. The basic functions offered by electro-optic and nonlinear waveguide devices is described and their use in more complex integrated optical components is illustrated with examples from the fields of optical communications, optical sensors and signal processing
