Abstract :
The PICCOLO modulation scheme was developed in early 1960s and was intended to offer relatively low data rate but robust communications in the HF band. The modulation system was a 32-ary MFSK employing time, frequency orthogonality. The channel capacity of a typical HF channel can vary from a few hundred bits per second to a few tens of bits per second. The software modem described allows the bit rate and tone positions to be varied thus higher bit rates can be accommodated successfully as well as those appropriate to poor channel conditions. The modem was realised through a Texas Instruments TMS320C25 DSP board
