Abstract :
Spaceborne active microwave sensors are briefly reviewed with reference to the 1978 Seasat satellite (for monitoring the oceans), and the European Remote Sensing Satellite, ERS-1, to be launched in 1990. The synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and wind scatterometer instruments are examined in more detail. User requirements for future SAR systems are considered. The impact of these requirements on the system is described. Some preliminary conclusions on the design of a future SAR are presented
