Abstract
As a response to the specific demand of the Spanish rural telecommunication network, Alcatel Standard Electrica has developed an advanced intelligent power system (IPS) with the main aim of increasing the reliability of the whole power system and facilitating and reducing the maintenance routines, costs and operations carried out by the PTTs. The authors describe the main characteristics of the IPS, emphasizing the supervision and control unit, the intelligent part of the system, which is in charge of the precise energy management of the power subsystems, like DOLs and batteries and of performing the maintenance functions associated with them
