Abstract :
Power reduction and throughput enhancement are critical issues in core/metro networks. Recent advances in and the future roles of electrical and optical transport technologies are discussed. Exploiting optical technologies is the best way of achieving the above goals. Important optical technologies that need to be developed are discussed; they include agility and elasticity of optical paths and large scale OXC architectures.
