Abstract
Ideally a video codec should be cheap, small and available to a wide market. It should also make use of current telecommunications services that are widely available or will become available within a short time span. Such a service is the integrated services digital network (ISDN). In terms of bandwidth the provision of digital transmission over the subscribers´ lines may be limited to 64 kbits/second. The advent of VLSI has led to low cost, high density devices for image processing becoming commercially available. However to achieve low complete system cost, application specific circuits are required. The design of such large silicon systems requires consideration of how well the algorithm maps onto the architecture
