Abstract :
There are three things a company must do to compete effectively. They are to: provide an efficient well automated manufacturing system which will give the business a distinct advantage over competitors; determine the order-winning-criteria (OWC); and control the process in such a way that the product meets the order winning criteria and maximises profit. It is not sufficient to control the process alone. It is essential to ensure that there is a degree of fit between marketing strategy and manufacturing ability. Having established that fit, it is essential to ensure that the process operates in the most profitable way possible. The authors describe how elements of a hardboard mill were instrumented and automated. They also explains how a real-time dynamic, fiscal and statistical computer mill model was produced. The purpose of the model is to enable the mill manager to meet the OWC and maximise profit
