Abstract
In future packet based wireless communication systems, transmission in the downlink will often dominate the traffic load. To achieve a high throughput also over fading channels, adaptive methods for adjustment of, for example, the modulation alphabet, and the coding complexity can be used. To have an effective communication there must be interaction between different layers of OSI model. This paper highlights the need for cross layer and analyze the performance of the system for the variation of parameters in the physical layer. It also tells that the effect of various modulations and coding in the physical layer on the performance of the transport layer. Finally depending on the performance, the modulation and coding pair is chosen for particular channel to have a high throughput in the transport layer.
